About Countering Biological Threats

The global life sciences community has exploded in size, sophistication, and mobility. Scientists enjoy greater access to education and Internet-based information, and now are working in an increasing number of facilities worldwide on a growing range of biological materials that are easier to manipulate and require fewer specialized skills than in years past. Our changing demographics – from exploding populations to urbanization to the accelerated movement of travelers to the increasing frequency of natural disasters – have also made populations more vulnerable to naturally occurring pandemics.

The sheer complexity of how biological threats affect individuals, animals, communities, and global networks calls for a comprehensive and integrated battery of capabilities that confront every stage of the biological threat lifecycle.

At Sandia National Laboratories, we combine innovative science, research and development, experienced specialists, and proven methodologies to deliver comprehensive, engineered solutions for the nation's toughest national security challenges.

We deliver the science, technology, and technical policy solutions for confronting and mitigating biological threats globally.

The Sandia Contribution

Sandia has made a number of significant contributions to the nation's biological threat standing, including:

Awareness - Prevention

Preparedness - Detection

Response - Recovery

The Sandia Advantage

The Countering Biological Threats programs have established Sandia in a significant leadership position:

Strategy Alignment
We began developing decades ago the kinds of complementary expertise needed to address the entire biological threat lifecycle, resulting in our complete alignment with the National Strategy for Countering Biological Threats.

Sponsors and Partners
Our longstanding relationships with universities, international non-governmental organizations and governments, and other national labs along with the Department of State, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Agriculture, and the White House Office of Science and Technology and National Security Staff establish us as a valued partner with the organizations working to confront biological threats worldwide.

Multidisciplinary Approach
We apply an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to threat reduction and mitigation, drawing from a broad range of specialties – including life, physical, and political sciences, engineering, technical policy, and information technology – to create targeted and holistic solutions and programs.

Thought Leadership
Sandia professionals helped to create the intellectual framework for biorisk management that established the worldwide standards for laboratory biosecurity, developed the operational framework and devices for public safety detection systems, and lead the world in microfluidic biochemical analysis and supporting technologies.

Technology and Science
Combining powerful systems analysis capabilities with biological sciences enables Sandia researchers to probe pathogen fundamentals, understand the behavior of both known and unknown pathogens, design powerful diagnostics and environmental sensors, created response plans with predictive modeling, and measure their effectiveness.

Global Engagement
Insight into the global threat spectrum and experience with U.S. Cooperative Threat Reduction programs positioned our experts to recognize the important role that technical engagement plays in protecting dual-use materials from accidental or intentional misuse.
